This month, we bring an acclaimed Coen Brothers movie, maybe a little different from their normal style.
Set in 1961, the movie follows one week in the life of Llewyn Davis, portrayed by Oscar Isaac. Llewyn is a struggling folk singer in New York City’s Greenwich Village. His musical partner, Mike, has tragically committed suicide. Llewyn’s recent solo album, titled “Inside Llewyn Davis”, isn’t selling well, and he finds himself penniless, crashing on the couches of friends and acquaintances.
The film delves into Llewyn’s journey as he grapples with achieving musical success while trying to keep his life in order. Along the way, he encounters a supporting cast that includes Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund, F. Murray Abraham, Justin Timberlake, and Adam Driver.
Most of the folk songs performed in the film are sung in full and recorded live, adding an authentic touch to the musical experience. The film’s cinematography and soundtrack contribute to its unique atmosphere.
The film premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix. It received critical acclaim and was nominated for several awards, including Academy Awards and Golden Globes. Since its release, it has been held in high esteem by critics and audiences alike, earning a place on lists of the best films of the 21st century.
